Redwood City Moves Forward with Interchange Expansion, Grants Eminent Domain Power

The Redwood City Council has authorized the City Attorney to negotiate land acquisitions and potentially invoke eminent domain, with the goal of facilitating the expansion of the Highway 101–Woodside Road interchange, involving 11 nearby property owners. With nearly 200 collisions reported at the site between 2018 and 2020, city officials cited public safety as the driving force behind the project. The plan, coordinated with Caltrans and regional transportation authorities, includes widening Woodside Road to six lanes, adding dedicated turn lanes, and reconstructing ramps to enhance traffic flow and pedestrian safety. While the council seeks agreements with affected owners, it stands ready to proceed to court if necessary.

How This Relates to Your Property

This project exemplifies how infrastructure developments driven by safety or congestion concerns can directly affect nearby properties, whether through land acquisitions, changes in traffic patterns, or increased construction activity. Even if your property isn't within the acquisition zone, such transformations can influence neighborhood accessibility, noise levels, and overall desirability.

Our platform tracks locational obsolescence and infrastructure projects, so homeowners can stay informed about factors that may impact their property’s value or desirability before ground is even broken.
